CFD Simulation of Battery Pack of Electric Vehicle

The most important element of Electric vehicle is the Battery Pack. During operations the temperature of the Batteries can increase and can lead to Fire.

We ran a CFD simulation to see the effects of air flow on temperature. Only half model was used to reduce the Computational time and resources.

  1. CAD Model:

Total 20 Cells are modeled in 4 rows and 5 columns with brackets on top and bottom.

To reduce the computational time and resources only one half of model is used.

  1. Mesh Properties:

Tetra Mesh - 3.12 Million Mesh size

Only Tet Mesh was used. No Prism layer was used to capture the BL as this was just a case study.

  1. Turbulence Model:

Realizable K -Epsilon with Standard wall function

  1. Boundary Conditions :

Battery walls - Heat Flux of 250 w/m2

Inlet - Velocity Inlet at 6 m/s at 300 K

Outlet - Pressure outlet at 0 Gauge Pressure and 300 K

Battery Casing - Wall BC

Symmetry Plane - Symmetry BC
